In the Presence of Time
~ Gurumayi Chidvilasananda

Gurumayi’s teaching “The sands of time” brings to my mind beautiful images from my recent journey to the Sahara Desert. Ever since my trip, my vision and being have seemed to be filled with sand.
I remember and think about the myriad patterns in the sand that were molded by the wind. The breeze seemed to be playing endlessly and constantly shaping each dune anew. Shadow and light also had an essential role in a reality in which everything around me appeared to be transforming constantly, grain by grain. Yet, at the same time, the vast picture always seemed to remain unchanged in my visual perception.
Gurumayi’s teaching “The sands of time” reminds me of the fleeting nature of time. And it inspires me to keep my focus instead on what is steady and unchangeable—the Guru and the Siddha Yoga teachings. These are like solid anchors and safe protections for me in the midst of the many desert storms of worldly existence.

In this way, time becomes an ally, guiding me to manifest the highest aspirations of my soul. With the Guru’s grace, I will honor time as a companion on my spiritual journey, using it to grow, transform, and fulfill my divine purpose.

I realized time is an aspect of God and contains great wisdom.

So too in sadhana, we are “baked” until our understanding of the Guru’s wisdom and precious teachings is complete within us. Like magic, the Guru’s gifts fill our hearts, nourishing us.

In an instant, the sun enchants the morning sky. In an instant, I see the colors of the rainbow on the scales of a fish jumping out of the water. In an instant, my Guru awakens the dormant Kundalini Shakti in a yearning soul. In an instant, a small plant emerges from the earth and grows up toward the sun. In an instant, a large tree’s leaves begin to play in the wind. In an instant, a jasmine flower opens its petals and spreads its fragrance into the atmosphere. This world is full of magic.

Then, as part of my daily schedule, I visited the Siddha Yoga path website this afternoon, and there I saw teaching 3. Suddenly, it all made sense to me: if I use my time well, then time will reveal its magic to me.
I am grateful to Gurumayi for this profound understanding.
