In the Presence of Time
~ Gurumayi Chidvilasananda

I noticed today that Gurumayi’s daily teachings from “In the Presence of Time” may be reflected in photographs in the “Nature in Shree Muktananda Ashram” galleries. For example, I saw “the dynamic movement of time” reflected in the beautiful photographs of moving water. I am now looking forward to reading Gurumayi’s daily teaching and then going to the gallery as a first step for contemplation.

With a sense of wonder lately, I have been noticing the stirrings of spring as snowdrops and jonquils determinedly push their way through the cold soil to reveal their delicate flowers. Tiny red leaf buds are appearing on the trees, and the peeper frogs are exuberantly croaking. In this way, nature is displaying “the dynamic movement of time” through this inevitable outburst into spring.
Similarly, “the dynamic movement of time” happens in my sadhana too. As in the winter season, the movement forward may be subtle in appearance; for example, physical challenges may seem to act as obstacles preventing growth. Yet through grace and self-effort, this season too moves ahead and transforms at the right time, flourishing into a new growth cycle.
Understanding all the seasons makes me more intent on fully embracing this time of growth, grateful for each blossoming understanding and expanded way of experiencing time.

From my understanding, one of the features of a dynamic system is that its upcoming state is, at least partially, decided by its current state. When I reflected on Gurumayi’s teaching “The dynamic movement of time,” it occurred to me that one of the reasons why time’s movement might be defined as dynamic is that my future depends on my actions and thoughts in the present. So, for me, any time to come depends on what I do with the time I am living in right now.
