As I contemplated Gurumayi’s teaching “The mettle of time,” I realized that time is divine. It has within itself all the divine qualities, the divine virtues. Therefore, its “mettle,” its strength and resolve, is immeasurable. This teaching from Gurumayi made me understand the divine virtues in a new way, from a different perspective. I understand now that they arise from the Self, so they are innate within me. I just have to turn within and pray for grace so that I may access them and put them to good use.

Through the grace of Gurumayi, Baba, Bade Baba, and all the Siddhas, I am learning about “the mettle of time.” I feel that God is offering me the perfect obstacles to give me the opportunity to let go of negative, wasteful tendencies and to develop virtues.

When I researched the meaning of mettle, I found how timely this teaching is for me. It means “a person’s ability to cope well with difficulties or to be resilient.” As I contemplated the teaching “The mettle of time,” an inner voice assured me there would be difficulties and that I could build the ability to cope with them. Rather than praying to not have difficulties, I can face them and accept them as a normal part of life. With every difficulty I face, I can learn and become stronger.

I discovered from the dictionary that mettle means “courage and fortitude.” To me, these two qualities are imbued in time. There have been moments in my life when I have needed these qualities, and Gurumayi’s great teachings have moved with me through time and helped me to face the challenges that come along in life.
