When I thought about what Gurumayi might mean by “The speech of time,” I thought about the ticking of a clock. For me, the ticking of the clock symbolizes the language of time—it gives a unit of measure through its ticking. The ticking of time reminds me how precious time is.

It’s not only the ticking that speaks to me, but also my inner voice that tells me not to ignore it—to listen and to use my time in a meaningful and valuable way.

It occurs to me that “the speech of time” could refer to how I speak of time. Since engaging with Gurumayi’s daily teachings on time, more and more I have been experiencing time as my friend. I have been reflecting on all the ways that time helps me and blesses me. I have been thanking time and invoking the gifts of time. When situations are challenging, I know that with the partnership between my self-effort and the grace of my friend—time—things will get better.

Now I think of and speak of time as a beloved companion who is always with me.

Today’s teaching made me think of scriptures like the Vedas—sacred speech—that have come to us through time, and how Gurumayi is guiding us to apply these ancient truths in modern life. In this way “the speech of time” is timeless—the Truth.
