समय के समक्ष
In the Presence of Time
~ Gurumayi Chidvilasananda

For me, “The price of time” is decided by the choices I make—however conscious or unconscious they may be. This recognition has motivated me to stay awake and be present. It has deepened my understanding of how important it is to live from a space of awareness.

The price of time
It used to be,
That I gave my time away
To the most urgent bidders.
My Guru’s grace intervened
In the form of words
To live by.
Now, I work to value my
Time
Focus
Attention
Care
To spend wisely
And price it with great worth.

When I was young, I used to hear people say, “Time is money.” Although I recognized the importance of work and responsibility, and the relationship between these and money, I did not agree with the statement. For me, the value of time was love. And so, like a gold digger, I have sought love in my life.
Through my relationships and activities, I found love—a love that was dependent on outer sources—until the day when I said to myself, “There is something more.” My quest led me to meet Baba Muktananda. With his teachings and grace, I experienced unconditional love. That was the sublime love I had been seeking.
I am grateful to Baba for letting me know the real “price of time,” which exists in the cave of my own heart, where I enter through meditation.

As I contemplate the teaching “The price of time” I recognize that for me, precious moments in time are like golden coins, and I can’t place a price on these invaluable golden memories.
I am also reminded of the value of “now.” I bring this to the forefront of my mind when I remember Gurumayi’s Message “Make your time worth your time.” Like a rocket to the moon, this is always my goal. I may not always be on track, but I realign myself with this golden teaching every day.

When I thought about “the price of time,” I realized that although time is priceless, for me it also has a high price that money cannot buy. For me “the price of time” is discipline, conscious living, sadhana, right aspiration.
If I live my life in a disciplined way, I have much more time for what is important to me. If I live my life consciously, I can choose how I spend my time and learn to face challenges in order to live more freely. When I follow my sadhana with the right aspiration, I can make the best and most valuable use of my time.

I was enchanted by today’s teaching “The price of time” and by the picture in the background of Mount Kailas. Gurumayi’s teaching reads to me like a Zen koan. I wonder, “Can I put a price on time?” It stills my mind to contemplate this question. I think that time is priceless, and that reminds me of how valuable my time is.
