In the Presence of Time
~ Gurumayi Chidvilasananda

As I’ve practiced Gurumayi’s daily teachings on time since the beginning of the year, I have been seeing and experiencing “the haven of time,” that is, time as a refuge.
The apparent necessity to be on time for an event or to meet a deadline used to stress me out. Now I experience time as more elastic, more friendly. If I feel rushed and anxious about being on time, I say to myself, “I have time.” I breathe consciously and move mindfully, holding the awareness that I am in “the haven of time.” And lo and behold, things work out, and I find myself in the right place at the right time.

For me, coming to understand time as a sanctuary, sacred shelter, and refulgent refuge of rest and protection is an inner paradigm shift!

When I received this teaching, I repeated it out loud several times and then spontaneously gave myself a hug. This is what a “haven” is for me: the feeling of safety and reassurance that a hug gives.
I feel this kind of inner embrace when I meditate and touch the Self, after chanting when my heart rests in peace, and when I offer seva and feel a quiet, inner contentment. I also experience “the haven of time” when conversing with a dear friend, enjoying a nourishing meal, and relaxing at the end of the day.
These are the many havens that time offers me.

For me “the haven of time” is when my eyes met Gurumayi’s eyes for the first time. Then and now, thinking of her, I experience peace and happiness in my heart.
