I have been practicing this
dharana for one week. As I sit for meditation, I remind myself that my body is Consciousness, my mind is Consciousness, this room is
Bhairava, my
asana is
Bhairava, my thoughts are Consciousness, and so on. It feels as if one minute I’m saying these words to myself and the next thing I know meditation is over. However, in reality, forty to fifty minutes have passed!
The amazing thing is that I feel very natural throughout the day, and I notice no difference between the state of being aware of Consciousness and my ordinary state. I now understand that Consciousness is not just in the things I perceive—the people, animals, trees, and vehicles—but also in my perception itself. I feel that the experience of
Bhairava has awakened within me!
Dhanyavad, Gurumayi ji, for this wondrous
dharana!

It was on an ordinary workday that I experienced the “All-Pervasiveness of
Bhairava.”
While awaiting the arrival of a challenging patient, I started to inwardly repeat the mantra
Om Namah Shivaya. When the patient arrived, I caught a glimpse of the light of Consciousness in his eyes.
In that moment I was overcome with the sense of being one in Consciousness with my patient—as asserted by the
dharana: “The state of
Bhairava (Consciousness) can be known everywhere, and by anyone.”

When I read this
dharana, I was perplexed by how easy it sounds to experience the Self. I wondered, could it be that easy?
And yet, upon reading it, I had this very experience! In a flash I saw Gurumayi in my mind’s eye, and I felt as if I were swimming in a shimmering blue sea of love.
In the sweet tenderness of this love, I felt a longstanding concern of mine dissolve. I stayed in this state of joy for a while.

This
dharana heightened my awareness that the state of
Bhairava, supreme Consciousness, is present in deep silence as well as in the midst of pandemonium.
As I continued to study and meditate on each word of the
dharana, I experienced more deeply that every animate being and inanimate object is part of Consciousness.
Salutations to my
Shri Guru, who benevolently opened my spiritual eye to perceive the different manifestations of the state of
Bhairava.

As I closed my eyes to concentrate on this inspiring
dharana, a feeling surged from the depths of my Heart. I felt: “I am light. Everything around me, within and without, is shimmering with light. Light is Consciousness. I am one with light and Consciousness.”

This
dharana from the
Vijnanabhairava helps me to glide into meditation very easily. When I practice it, I feel that I can detach from the mental chattering that sometimes holds me back from going deeper into meditation.
As I hold my attention on the pervasiveness of
Bhairava (Consciousness), I experience the subtle presence of the Guru.
Thank you, Shri Gurumayi, for giving us such invaluable
dharanas on the Siddha Yoga path website.
