A Sweet Surprise 2014
A Letter from Swami Akhandananda
December 3, 2013
Dear Siddha Yogis,
What a wondrous eleven months we’ve experienced in the year 2013 as we have studied, practiced, assimilated, and implemented Gurumayi’s Message for 2013, Mantra Japa.
Om Namah Shivaya. Guru Om. So’Ham.
How can we ever thank the Siddha Yoga Gurus, and especially Gurumayi, for giving us the chaitanya mantras and instilling the confidence within us that we can attain the Truth in our lifetime?
As you know, A Sweet Surprise satsang at the dawn of each new year has become a beacon of light for our year-long Siddha Yoga sadhana. It is a precious gift we receive from Gurumayi. Therefore, as you continue to focus on this year’s Message for the final 28 days of 2013, I want to whet your anticipation with a reminder that there will be A Sweet Surprise satsang on January 1, 2014!
Hopefully you have already marked this date—January 1—indelibly in your calendar, to participate in A Sweet Surprise and receive Gurumayi’s Message. Thank you in advance.
On New Year’s Day you will hear Gurumayi’s Message for 2014 through a Live Audio Stream from Shree Muktananda Ashram, via the Siddha Yoga path website. We have gained the understanding that when we all gather together for satsang at the same time, no matter where we are in the world—that satsang is taking place in the universal hall.
Are you excited?
Siddha Yoga Meditation Teacher
As I read Swami Akhandananda's welcoming letter, I reflected on the word confidence
and looked up its dictionary definition: "freedom from doubt; belief in yourself and your abilities." I realize that the Siddha Yoga Gurus have graced us with so many teachings and practices that give us hope and confidence that we can attain the Truth in this lifetime.
Throughout this past year, I practiced the Message that Gurumayi gave us during A Sweet Surprise
2013. As I repeated the chaitanya
mantras passed down to us, I could feel many doubts dissolve within me about the truth of who I really am—I am That!
With Gurumayi's grace, I have definitely become more confident that I will attain and remain in the Truth, in the Light that I am.
Thank you, beloved Gurumayi. Your New Year's Message is truly a beacon of light all year long, revealing our true identity as the Self.

As I await A Sweet Surprise 2014, I recognize some of the many gifts I received in 2013 as I studied, practiced, assimilated, and implemented Gurumayi's Message—increased focus, devotion, surrender, and gratitude. But the gift I cherish the most is becoming more loving to myself and others as the walls of separation between us dissolve more and more, day by day.
Thank you, Gurumayi. Each day of 2013, you graced me with increased awareness of the love within me and within others.

A few weeks ago, an inspiration came to open myself more fully to receive the Message for 2014 by reviewing my journal entries for 2013, as well as referring to the postings on the website regarding Mantra Japa
. After doing a preliminary survey of the website archives this morning, I am overflowing with delight and gratitude for the magnitude and quality of the offerings we have received to elevate our practice of mantra japa
this past year. In preparation for the first of January, I look forward to diving in and revisiting it all.
What a grand year it has been! It’s thrilling to imagine what Gurumayi has in store for us in A Sweet Surprise

I asked my father, “What is A Sweet Surprise
?” Then my father told me that since 1991, Gurumayi has been giving a Message for us to follow throughout the year. I took A Sweet Surprise 2013,
and I have done mantra japa
throughout the year. I am very much excited and waiting for what will be the Sweet Surprise
for me from Gurumayi.
A lot of love to you, Gurumayi.

Yes, Swami Akhandananda, I am excited as I imagine myself there in the universal hall on New Year’s Day. Thank you for being such a clear and gracious messenger all through this year.
Beneath the excitement, I experience a steady current of trust and gratitude. I know that I’m being lovingly guided by a realized Master. When I revisit the postings on Mantra Japa
that appeared on the website this year, I am moved by how well cared for we have been. After giving her Message to guide us through the year, Gurumayi has stayed with us all year long, guiding our study and practice of mantra japa
in so many creative and powerful ways.
Personally, I feel so much stronger in my sadhana
, more stable, wise, and resolute.
And I feel that Gurumayi is guiding all of us, all over the world, to a great destiny.
Thank you, Gurumayi.

For me, the truly amazing, mysterious, and faith-giving experience of Gurumayi's annual Message is that, whatever the Message, I find that I begin to experience it in my life. When the Message we receive in A Sweet Surprise
is Mantra Japa
, mantra appears like magic in my being; when it is AUM
, I seem to be aware of AUM
in everything; when it is Abide in Silence
, I find myself craving silence, acutely aware of all the noise I allow in my mind. And along with the experience, contemplation arises automatically.
With so little effort on my part, Gurumayi's powerful teachings enter my being and permeate my life. I could never have imagined that I would find such love as the love of my Guru.

The moment I opened the Siddha Yoga path website and saw the possibility to register for A Sweet Surprise, I got so excited. And when I actually registered, I felt the surge of shakti I usually feel when I register for an Intensive. The added bonus of a Live Audio Stream from Shree Muktananda Ashram makes it that much more exciting as I think of how the whole world will be connected live and receiving grace at the same time.
Thank you, Gurumayi, for this blessing.

Since receiving Gurumayi's Message for 2013, each new day, as I've silently recited the mantra, listened to my breath repeating So'ham, or chanted Om Namah Shivaya, I have experienced again the wonderful grace I received on New Year's Day.
I am looking forward, with great anticipation, to participating in A Sweet Surprise, to finding out the Message for 2014, and to discovering the gifts I will be blessed with for another 365 days—each day a new day, with the grace from Gurumayi’s heart to us.
Thank you, Gurumayi, for your constant presence and grace within me as the mantra's vibration of love.
