In contemplating Gurumayi’s teaching “Respect for time,” I realized that having respect or high esteem for time creates a spaciousness inside of me. I become one with time and my life flows in companionship with time. It is as though I am swimming in the vast ocean of God’s pleasure, or perhaps God—in the form of time—is swimming me.

    Respect for time

When I saw the great gift of time
    on my hands.
    I felt awe and gratitude.

    Through Gurumayi’s teachings,
I am discovering that time is the perfect vehicle
for me to see God in myself as I am
and to see God in everything.

But I also saw my ego
    trying to manipulate my time
    for selfish reasons.
    I felt sad and guilty.

    What could I do?
    I can welcome time
with respect and a smiling face,
trusting in the grace of my Guru.

God has granted me a specific number of minutes in this lifetime on this earth plane. I have free will as to how I use or budget this time. This time is a golden opportunity for transforming my trajectory toward liberation as an embodied soul on the Siddha Yoga path.

With my Guru’s guidance, I am learning to develop discrimination. With discrimination, I am increasing my “respect for time.” Rather than squandering or wasting this wealth, I am learning to have “respect for time” by managing my time in a more beneficial way. Every minute of this wealth of time that I invest in my spiritual evolution contributes to not only being in a great state now but also to the state I will sustain upon transitioning from my physical body.
