समय के समक्ष
In the Presence of Time
~ Gurumayi Chidvilasananda

Today’s teaching reminds me of the “tongue twisters” my children and I used to enjoy saying! I also find it such a beautiful teaching! The phrase “the pages of time” reminds me that time is like a book where I can flip the pages and go back in time to review past experiences and moments. I can also turn the page and go forward in time to enter a new part of the story. And “the sageness of time” indicates to me that time contains its own wisdom.
Together, these two phrases suggest to me that the wisdom of time is contained within its unfolding story. Looking back through “the pages of time,” I can often see “the sageness of time“ that I wasn’t able to perceive in the moment. For example, there have been jobs and opportunities I wanted but didn’t get, and various life challenges that I wasn’t able to perceive as beneficial at the time. In hindsight they have always turned out to be for the best. Now as I review “the pages of time” in my own life, I deeply connect to “the sageness of time.”

In contemplating Gurumayi’s teaching for today, I recognize the wisdom of perceiving unfolding moments as “the pages of time” turning effortlessly, each one dissolving into the next. Every breath is a turning page, every pause a space for grace. What lesson does “the sageness of time” wish to reveal in this moment, I ask myself? I close my eyes, bow inward, and listen.

Gurumayi’s teaching “The pages of time, the sageness of time” is so profound and alive for me today. After chanting Shri Guru Gita in the Siddha Yoga Ashram in Oakland, I was reintroduced to a Siddha Yoga student, an elder on our path who has served Gurumayi and Baba. As we gazed at each other, the power of recognition and presence infused our hearts. In the silence of this exchange, I felt all the years of sadhana passing between us, with all the memories of service shared together.
I understood that when our memories may be slipping away, what remains is the truth of love, shared humanity, and service to the Guru. The heart seems to be evermore present when the mind releases its grip. I see the aging process as an opportunity to enter more deeply into wisdom. As I reflect on my years of Siddha Yoga sadhana, I feel renewed by this exchange, knowing with full conviction that no efforts are ever lost, for they vibrate in our bodies as the Truth.
