In the Presence of Time
~ Gurumayi Chidvilasananda

As I reflected on this teaching, these questions arose for me: What is a melody? Is it the beat of the heart? Is it the melancholy of longing? Is it the humming of joy? Or is it the ever-resonating echo through the universe—the AUM that is timeless, yet sometimes appears to have a boundary?
For me, “the melody of time” is the play of life itself. I feel that every life has its own unique melody, even though each melody is drawn from the same notes and the same scale. Some tones are higher, some are lower; some notes are longer, some are shorter—and sometimes they are in flux.
I can choose the song myself. It lies in my hands.

When I read “The melody of time,” I heard in my mind the beginning of one of my favorite Beethoven sonatas. Every time I listen to the recordings of this piece, not only am I inspired by the musician’s ability to play so many complex compositions, but I am also reminded of the ability of this composer with impaired hearing to render such timeless music. This tells me that the Divine will have its melodies rendered in time, with the instrument of grace providing the way.
