In the Presence of Time
~ Gurumayi Chidvilasananda

“The ebb and flow of time” reminds me of the breath. In meditation I connect to my divine source, the heart, through the ebb and flow of breathing and the support of the mantra.

When I first experienced the ebb and flow of the tide in England, I was fascinated. When the tide was out, the boats were lying on the sand and could not move. When the water came back with the tide, the opportunity to sail on the open sea was given again.
Similarly, “the ebb and flow of time” symbolizes for me the possibilities I have in my life. They are not always there, but they always come back. If I constantly follow my sadhana, I am fit and ready when the tide comes in, bringing the opportunity to sail across the ocean of duality toward freedom.

As I contemplate this teaching, I see that my awareness of the shakti ebbs and flows over time. When I am lost in the senses and the mind, with less connection to my heart, my awareness of the kundalini energy ebbs. When I sustain a connection to my heart while still enjoying the world in a balanced way, the inner energy flows freely.
Practicing self-effort, I am met with an abundance of grace. The more I walk this path, the more my experience of contentment, peace, love, and bliss increases. The more I sustain an inner connection to my divinity, the more I can see this divinity in the world and remain steadfast in the Self, beyond “the ebb and flow of time.”
