For me “adherence to time” means respecting time and being attuned so I can be at the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing. One meaning of the word adherence is attachment. When I attach myself to time, I feel a lightness, a connection to the divine.

For example, in my work as a nurse practitioner, I have a schedule for seeing my patients. When I do my best to adhere to the schedule, while still being flexible to meet the fluctuating needs of the moment, I feel a sense of lightness, like I am riding a wave of grace.

As I reflect on “adherence to time,” I connect to the grace, beneficence, and companionship of time in my life.

What comes up for me as I read this beautiful teaching, “Adherence to time,” is the way in which our bodies are linked to the cycle of a day. Many of us strive to adhere to a schedule that involves waking up at a certain time, eating at regular times, and so forth, in order to feel our best. Our physical well-being is linked to the earth, planetary bodies, cycles of light, seasons, and so on.

I thought of how important it is in sadhana that we honor the simple needs of the body and help it to support us on our journey. This inspires me to reflect on my routines and also to feel grateful for each twenty-four-hour unit of grace and renewal.

“The adherence to time” for me means offering myself more and more fully to the moment while sustaining my connection to my inner divinity more and more. Then I feel an abundance of well-being, whether I am offering myself to one of the spiritual practices, to work, or to relationships. I feel uplifted with this fusion of self-effort and grace.
