Many years ago I had the great good fortune to be a Gurukula student in Gurudev Siddha Peeth. At that time Gurumayi had asked that the mantra Om Namah Shivaya be sung in Baba’s Samadhi Shrine all day and all night. I used to go to the Shrine and chant the mantra whenever I could. It was such an ecstatic experience to become absorbed in the mantra. Being with Baba in this way, while chanting the mantra, was sublime.

One afternoon after I had finished my chanting session, I went outside again. There a woman who saw me kept looking at me. She asked me, “What have you been doing?” I replied, “I was just chanting Om Namah Shivaya for a long time.”

She responded, “Ahhhh! You look so beautiful and radiant—and now I understand why.”

This sacred mantra is the golden anchor which brings my mind to rest in my heart. Whenever challenges appear at work or when I toss and turn at night, unable to sleep, Om Namah Shivaya guides me to my golden inner temple of calm, peace, and contentment.

As our Gurus have taught us, we are in the midst of the age of Kali-yuga, and embracing our sacred mahamantra, Om Namah Shivaya, is the perfect means to stay afloat. The more I understand, study, and repeat this mantra, the more my experiences deepen. The result for me has been a sense of constant inner awareness and balance. This state helps me to face my challenges in life easefully.

In order to better understand Baba Muktananda’s teaching in verse 480 from Mukteshwari, I first sought to understand what our current age of Kali-Yuga actually entails and how it manifests. My research has given me a greater understanding of why the repetition of the mantra Om Namah Shivaya is indeed so valuable in this age.

Traditional martial arts teach how to recognize and conquer an enemy with confidence. For me, repeating the mantra Om Namah Shivaya is an art I can use to defeat my well-disguised inner enemies, such as confusion or fear. I long to always be fully immersed in the golden light of love in my heart—and Baba has lovingly reached out with this verse to show me the way.
