In the Presence of Time
~ Gurumayi Chidvilasananda

For the last several months as I approached my eighty-second birthday, I reviewed journals from my life and from forty-one years of sadhana. From the review, I wrote a spiritual autobiography to summarize my experiences and transformations for my own understanding. As I did this, I became aware of the role that time played—as I engaged with the practices over time, a great purification took place.
Through Gurumayi’s teachings on time, I now see that the transformations I experienced, including the clearing of many painful samskaras, were truly “the fruits of time”! I now understand how the changes brought about by sadhana do not happen in an instant; they take time to unfold.

As I reflected on today’s teaching “The fruits of time,” it occurred to me that when I let go of a habit that does not use my time well, space is created for something new. For example, if I let go of the constant use of my phone, I will have more time for spiritual practices. Then the fruit of the benefits of my spiritual practices can grow.

As I reflect on “the fruits of time,” I have come to realize that if I make an effort from my deepest intention to fulfill my dharma, my efforts will bear fruit over time.

A few days ago, walking in my garden, I was surprised to see that tiny fruit had appeared on the pear tree. I noticed that insects had already contributed to the fertilization of the flowers. Now, I realized, time will come into play in supporting the ripening process and leading the fruit toward maturity.
When Kundalini Shakti was awakened in me, I entered a similar process. Since then, time has been leading me toward spiritual maturity. The awakened inner energy is the “sap” that flows through my being and supports the “sun of the teachings” and the “rain of the practices” in expanding my knowledge of the Truth and in stabilizing my awareness of the Self.
With patience, I already relish in my heart the blissful taste of “the fruits of time.”
