Baba Muktananda’s Timeless Teachings

Elucidation by Oscar Figueroa
The ocean has a bewitching, almost hypnotic power―a formidable and sonorous mass of water, so full of life, from which waves ceaselessly rise and dissolve. Beholding this natural wonder, one cannot help but feel respect and admiration. Yet, beneath the mighty and relentless waves is perhaps the true marvel: the supreme peace of the ocean’s depths. In giving this image—which is a classic metaphor found in the Upanishads1—and relating it to each one of us, Baba Muktananda reminds us that, at the core of what is characterized by fluctuation and impermanence, we can always find quietude. We can always find the imperturbable, deep ocean of the Self. Baba’s teaching guides us to go beyond the vagaries of worldly existence and the multiple layers of our outward-facing personality, so that we may discover the state of absolute repose that is our most authentic nature. With the delicate and powerful support of the Siddha Yoga practices, Baba’s words can lead us to abide in that peace―our natural home.
